Why does a gyroscope rotate on it’s axis when there is no equal and opposite force acting on it?
Sit in a swivel chair and hold a spinning bicycle wheel upright in front of you at a right angle to your body (as if your arms were the forks of a bike).
The chair will rotate. Why?
Newtons 3rd law says: The forces of two bodies on each other are always equal and are directed in opposite directions.
There is no obvious force from the spinning wheel driving the chair around – so why does it rotate?
The bicycle wheel is losing angular momentum while you and the chair are gaining angular momentum. That is force acting on both of the bicycle, you and the chair, in a gravity field. The amount of angular momentum lost or gained is proportional to the masses of the bicycle wheel and you and the chair combined.
