Where is the best and cheapest place to buy the wool spinning wheels?
I want to teach myself to spin wool and really want to find one…Please help
Hi, spinning wheels don’t really come cheap. Even when bought used they only come down to about half their retail price. Not surprising since a lot of (or even all) spinning wheels are still hand made.
The least expensive ones seem to be the babe spinning wheels http://www.babesfibergarden.com . (which are mostly plastic.) running at 200 US dollars. some are a lot above that but not lower.
Also the ashford Kiwi runs at 340 US Dollars. All wooden and pretty cute.
There was a new one called the ladybug, I’ve quite forgotten who it’s by but I think it should be one of the cheaper ones. OOh, not cheap, http://www.villagespinweave.com/IBS/SimpleCat/Product/asp/product-id/36717447.html
I’d suggest looking over the ratios of different wheels, with a mind towards what you’ll eventually want to spin, higher ratios spin thinner or higher twist yarn and lower ratios spin bigger or lower twist yarn.
All-in-all I’d really suggest getting a spindle first they’re a lot cheaper. And for other reasons.
My first spindle was a Golding spindle. they’re very well made and appear to be sturdy. If you get one don’t spin with it over a wooden floor, I dented mine (the floor). i don’t have much exprience with different spindles really.
here’s the spindle page from Paradise Fiber’s, they’re a good place to get fiber from online, http://www.paradisefibers.net/Drop-Spindles-s/32.htm . They also sell some wheels by different company’s.
just as a guide I think your first spindle should weigh at least an ounce.
Some part of me’s suggesting that you pick up a spinning magazine. Spin-off’s a reasonably good one if you can get it near you. I’m in the US. I don’t know where you are. But at least Spin-off has lists of dealer’s from the different spinning wheel manufacturer’s so that you could find out easily if there are any near you. I’d think that most of the places would have lessons. Even one of the yarn shops near me gives spinning lessons, so maybe you should look around.
There are usually some listings on ebay for spinning wheels and some people have had luck lurking their local craigs list . Also, auctions and other things of the sort are supposed to be good places to look.
Good luck, I hope you find a good wheel or spindle. And that you enjoy this new craft that you’re trying out.
ETA: there’s also the hitchhiker wheel that runs pretty cheap.
