A ball on a rollercoaster from rest begins to travel down on not a very steep slope.?
It then travels over a banked curve and down a steep slope. What energy transformations are occurring?
My answer.. so the ball contains potential energy at rest in which turns into kinetic energy (moving energy) as it is rolling over the track. Is this right or is there more to it?
If the ball is able to roll, then your questioning was correct, there is more to it.
Potential energy must get converted into both kinetic energy and rotational energy.
It takes energy to make objects start to spin. Think about a stationary bowling ball, if you wanted to start spinning it, you would have to put energy into the system to acceleration the ball rotationally. The same situation applies to the rolling ball. A rolling ball will fall slower than a frictionless sliding one, since some of the energy from the potential energy has to go toward rotational acceleration.
