What is the difference between smooth and full grain leather?
Difference in texture? Feel? Quality?
When leather is tanned it is split to provide a workable thickness of leather.
The Full grain leather is the top split of this leather and would have originally had the hair on its top surface. Sometimes they have to remove a fine layer from the outer surface to remove marks made by branding, insect damage, barbed wire damage etc. this is then known as top grain. Full grain is when the leather is totally intact and has not been corrected or altered in any way.
A lot of leather does not have a prominent natural grain pattern (this is usually printed or embossed into the leather) so a Full Grain leather could be quite smooth or it could have a printed grain pattern.
Some leathers are plated which can also produce a very smooth finish and these could be full grain or top grain.
Full grain leather is always the best quality of leather and will feel softer than leather that has been corrected and pigment coated.
