Question about carry on suitcase?

I’ve always checked luggage any larger than my tote that I use as a carry on, but this time I’m not going to be gone for very long so I’m just going to use a small suitcase and I’m hoping I can use it as a second carry on but I’m worried that it won’t fit in the overhead compartment (I’ve never put anything there so I don’t know how big they are).

Generally a 21″ will fit in the overhead bins or under your seat. However, if you expand pack it really full and use the expander zippers, it will not longer be the right size. In addition, many of airlines are now using smaller aircraft. Even the approved bags are too big for those aircraft. Face the fact that you may have to check your bag anyway.
