Italy – Rome or Venice?
okay so I have narrowed it down to two choices.
Rome – a lot of sight seeing
Venice – staying next to a river would be beautiful
it’s a surprise long weekend for my partner in around the june month of 2009.
he’s always wanted to go to both places, but which do you think would be the best?!? give opinions with reasons please!
Either one is great – there really isn’t a best. They are different and each has it’s own character that can be appreciated. The decision should depend on your interests.
If you’re interested in Roman history, the choice should be obvious. There are a large number of churches, museums, markets, fountains, and other attractions to see. There’s so much and so many opportunities for day trips (e.g., Pompeii, Tivoli, Orvieto …) that I might consider leaving Rome for later when you have more time to visit.
I live about two hours from Venice and spend a lot of time there. There is a lot more to see and do in Rome; however, Venice also has enough to keep you fully occupied for a weekend trip. A day or two is about right for covering Venice. La Regata delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare should be in Venice one Sunday this year – it’s a regatta between teams from Venice, Pisa, Genova, and Amalfi. Before the race there’s a large parade of people from each region in historical costume. There are also tours of Venice’s gardens in June – they’re not available the rest of the year. Also the Biennale will be running next year – it’s a major art and culture show throughout the city (the main areas are in the Giardini and at Arsenale). I usually spend more than one weekend just for this.
One thing though, as someone else noted, Rome has a nice river. Venice is not on a river – it’s on a number of islands which is why all the canals and bridges are there.
Weather really isn’t a factor at that time of year. You can expect both to be nice. If you’re early in June, the crowds of tourists shouldn’t be too bad either.
