Black Stout

Black Stout
How dark can we make a beer?

I will like any homebrewer make porters, stouts, etc., but I was just wondering how dark can it be made? Not really the color but just using the black malts and the results. Will the beer be like if very high amounts of dark malt is used?
Correction
What will the beer be like if very high amounts of dark malt is used?

Here is the thing with the dark beers. Most are dry due to astringency. This astringency comes from the chemicals produced in the lengthy roasting of the malt. Using some of the grain is pleasing but too much has the opposite effect. The beer becomes dry, chalky, and with a strong” burnt” flavor. Lost are the subtle roasted nut, coffee, and richness the malt would have normally imparted to the beer. But for the sake of knowledge I might try an small pilot brew of about 2-3 gallons with excess of 3 pounds of malt. If you can consider the expense worth the practical knowledge gained then do it.
Also consider this could be the next wild trend in craft beers. If coffee and other things can be added then why not a very strong dark element?
