Betty Boop attracted and captured the hearts of many passionate fans worldwide with her independent attitude, female charm and charisma. 3. Betty Boop’s “Coed” was one of the “Screen Songs Cartoons” the successor to the old “Ko-Ko Song Cartunes” which revived the bouncing ball for sound audiences.
4. In 1995 to commemorate her 65th anniversary, the “Betty Boop Confidential” retrospective toured 20 cities in the United States, ending in a special screening at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood.
5. Betty Boop had no name, or used different names, until she appeared in “Betty Coed” (1931). It was at that point that the “Betty Boop’s” name became connected with her character.
6. Betty is a renowned international Star; her world tour includes a guest spot on NBC’s “Today” with Willard Scott and appearances in the London “Now YWS Parade” and the “Christmas Parade” in Hong Kong.
7. Long before Marilyn Monroe’s dress was blowing in the wind Betty Boop’s dress made this statement in “Ups and Downs” (1932).
8. In “Silly Scandals” (1931) and “Poor Cinderella” (1934) the glamorous icon appeared in her underwear, more than three decades before Madonna was even born.
9. Betty first ran for the office of President in “Betty Boop For President” (1932) against Mr. Nobody. The title was later used for a 1980 compilation film “Betty for President:” The Movie, sponsored by a group of ecstatic businessmen headed by Alan Abel. Betty Boop’s platform was a good-natured poke at the election year. Her slogan was “Don’t be a poop. Vote for Boop!”
10. In 1930 a wave of morally rigorous and strict attacks and a costly strike led to the temporary end of Betty Boop Cartoons in 1939, with “Yip. Yip.Yippy!”
11. Betty is currently the spokes-toon for the “Adopt-A-Cartoon” Animation Preservation Project dedicated to the preservation of pre-1950 cartoons.
12. After 1935 The Hays Office of the Motion Picture Producer’s and Distributor’s Code, the predecessor of today’s ratings system, succeeded in raising Betty Boop’s daring necklines and lowering her hemlines to near-primness.
13. Betty was in fact an early feminist. She is the only female cartoon star who is not a cast down for a male. She’s an independent woman who once said “I can do anything a man can do.”
14. Before the censors toned her down, Betty’s sexy silhouette was frequently exposed in films when she passed in front of a light source.
15. By 1934, the talking animals that had been Betty’s playmates were done away with from the series. After that her only animal playmates were silent pets.
